I thought about addressing this issues for 4.1 (admin and edit panels):

* Changing the HTML layout to be more skinnig friendly

Now it's all tables and some odd CSS stuff.

* Splitting up UI elements

The edit panel is just one block which is inflexible and breaks some 
layouts (eg long element titles in a narrow column)

* Adding better localization support

Neither can you edit the translated page (only the original) nor can you 
edit the translation parent of a record.

So while working at it I could add some hooks for adding stuff as well.
