Do you see those belonging to each other? The only connection I see is that 
you are able to enable the editpanels... but beside that?

Exactly :-)
For the admin-panel: do you imagine something more like a rewrite including 
some snippets for the old functionality (info panel and such)? I actualy do 
to make it flexible. But here again, some templating decision should be made 
first, there are a couple of ways of doing it. And I am not a fan of all 
those extensions, all implementing their own way of coping with things. I 
guess a templating-recomendation thorugh ECT could be the result of this, if 
not even development will take place in that area.
