I agree. But if you need it, and you are not that deep into the database 
structure of TYPO3 or databases at all, it might cause some headaches. 
And if this is the case, developing an extension is far more overhead. IMHO.

I would not call it specialized, since it is no new feature. It just 
allows to use the field with larger numbers.
