I am more for
lets-pick-a-small-toolkit-and-use-it-in-TYPO3-to-save-our-time approach.

Fortunately, we use ADODB for DBAL (though I did not have time to try
it). I am using ADODB in other projects and it saves me a lot of time. I
think we could use 3rd-party solutions broader as as soon as they are
stable, do what we need and compatible in license. There is really no
point in implementing everything ourselves.
