I looked into that this morning. It works with 32M, but not with less, it 
seems. Umpfh.

The memory is consumed during parsing the XML (this breaks it with 20-24-28M) 
and when serializing the result to write it to disk (breaks with 30M). All 
numbers on my machine without any warranty :)

So it seems impossible to improve this easily. It would require changes to the 
overall concept of how things are handled, at least internally. To judge the 
need for this: what is the usual memory_limit for people out there? 
Specialised hosters will adapt, I think/hope, but what about the "cheapos"? 

Any input is welcome!
