That's not completely true - if the first edition is sold out you can 
decide how to proceed with following editions you can even move to a 
different publisher or publish them on your own.

But to add my two cents to the entire topic ... I agree with the 
concerns you brought up and I wonder why I've never heard of a CLA in 
relation to any other OSS project.
