This change isn't good from usability side.
With removed DS selektor it's not possible to select a different DS for 
subpages. Either you check the option in EM and have same behaviour as 
before, or uncheck and no DS-Selektor anymore.

I think the most annoying part is the selektor for the template. This 
should be default all the time, it can be changed in page properties all 
the time.

Hiding the DS-Selektor complete could be an option for an Editor to 
prevent them selecting wrong template.
