[Typo3-linux] attempts to open quickstart site fails

I've downloaded and installed Typo3_src-3.5.0-2a and quickstart-3.5.0-2a and
followed the instructions in install.txt. I had to work through a few minor
issues with GD and php upload file size limits, and in the end, I have a
working Back End, but when I point my browser at the test site, I get a very
pretty box telling me "Error! No pages are found on the rootlevel!". I have
a system running Mandrake 9.1 with the following:

Apache 2.0.44
php 4.3.0
mysql 4.0.11

/var/www/html/typo3_src-3.5.0 owned by apache:apache (used to be 1000:apache
with same problem)
/var/www/html/quickstart owned by apache:apache (also used to be
1000:apache)

symlink typo3_src is good.

I'm probably missing something obvious, but I can't see it right now.

I've looked through my apache logs, but they don't show any problems with
permissions or files not being found.

When in the Back End, there are no files listed under Quickstart.

Any hints or help, or even a complete answer :-) is most appreciated.
BTW - Great product :-)
