[Typo3-linux] PHP imagetypes()?

Hello,

I've been trying to get Typo3 going on my small personal server today,
and I've been trying to follow the instructions, but it seems that I
never see this "1-2-3 install", its more like "1-2-5-3-6-4 install".
Anyhow... the only one that I've been able to semi-setup is the
testsite.  But it dies when i click on "phpinfo()" saying:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: imagetypes() in
/var/www/typo3_src-3.5.0/t3lib/class.t3lib_install.php on line 797

I'm running Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 with apache 1.3 and php 4.2.3, neither
of which were compiled on the system, i simply got the packages for
them.  PHP that comes with debian does not have the image modules built
in, which is why imagetypes() doesn't exist.  So what i'm wondering is
if that function is really required.  I'm playing around with Typo3 on
this box, but once i feel comfortable with it, i'm transfering it to a
Win2k-IIS server that i do not administer.  From my understanding, the
image stuff doesn't work on php for windows.  So even if it'd compile it
on my box and get it working, once i move the stuff to the windows
server, i'd be SOL right?

And the other sites have also caused me problems, even the dummysite,
but those i'm pretty sure its just a matter of playing with the options
some more.  I got frustrated and just kept the defaults for the testsite
one and it worked.
