The manual of the phpunit extension provides some help [1].
Concerning how to approach unit testing in General, I highly recommend
the Book "Test-Driven Development by Example" by Kent Beck.
The manual of the PHPUnit package also has some instructions on unit
testing with PHPUnit [2].
