I totally agree with Stig. RTE is a in my opinion a vitally important aspect
of Typo3 and to get it working properly a royal pain in the rear. Is there
any way to make it work fully right out of the box and then it could be
adjusted/personalized after, rather than have to adjust and tweak it up
front?

I am looking forward to an easier RTE solution.
