The built-in mechanism for static file publishing is a real pain IMHO, 
but I agree that httrack and a dedicated static file server would boost 
performance. You would gain even more if you used one of the small 
webservers I mentioned above for this because Apache sucks at static 
file serving. If you have an extremely high peak load, you might also 
try fefe's gatling (http://fefe.de/gatling).

BTW, has anyone tried mod_proxy for cheap caching without static files?
