Well, I'd love to not clone the package. What I really want is run the
same package on different paths with the path determining the settings
(i.e. the DB backend). If that worked without duplicating code, that
would be even better.

That's a good question...which I cannot answer. All I know is that so
far all my attempts have failed and I haven't had the time to
investigate everything in detail. However, as that might mean quite a
bit of time commitment, I wanted to make sure that I'm not reinventing
the wheel, anyway. But from your comment I conclude that I'm probably
not. :)
