I think you missed the point here.

When I update my system I usually select the different patches manually
because some of them are known to be even more harmful than leaving the
system unpatched. So it's not like hiding the car but driving a route that
is well known to be more secure than another.

And most of the professional administrators I know do it exactly the same
way.
An automated update is something for the average user without much
background knowledge. So I guess that a lot of TYPO3 BE users (who are
usually working on a higher skill level) will still work with IE6 within the
next 12 months. Nobody knows the security holes of IE7 yet, and this is why
people might stick to the things they are used to much longer than you might
expect.

A period of 6 months to drop the market share of IE6 to the level of NS4 is
IMHO quite optimistic.

But anyway it doesn't matter if IE7 behaves just like the other browsers do.
You can still serve the IE6 users with conditional comments and proprietary
hacks, while the rest including the IE7 users will happily work without this
stuff.
