[TYPO3-dam] Problems with indexing

Hello,

it's been a long time since I've had problems with DAM indexing and I
can't seem to get to the bottom of this.

Neither do uploaded files get indexed, also manual indexing via
dam_index doesn't seem to work. At one point tried to batch-delete 2
files via DAM and even got an error 500.

My system is hosted on a shared provider. Are there any php-security
settings known to interfere with DAM? php-version too old? Here are my
specs:

Typo3 4.3.1
php 5.2.12
DAM 1.1.4
DAM_index 1.1.0
