Ernesto, quite interesting case you are describing here, which I can 
duplicate. No I dont know of an existing config-setting; howecer it 
should be relatively easily imlementable. note! you will have to take 
into account the read-only-filemounts, where the editor might only 
select a record, though not edit its meta-data.

Anyway, in case of editing the metadata, the user has to be aware of 
other usages (pages/content elements) where the item is used. Otherwise 
it might happen that he changes the caption to something completely 
in-appropriate on "that other page, also using the same image".
So it would be needed to show the user all record-usages on other pages 
(eventually with links to those pages).

Ernesto, would you add that as a feature-request to mantis?

BTW: the described "local caption overrules the global one" method will 
aviod the dscribed mishap AND allow the editor to change the caption 
right within the CE he is editing recently.
