There is already the tab "Verwendung" (german) where the referencing
items are listed.

It still complements each other: You might want to use a picture on a
tt_content, notice it has no global caption yet (or that it is wrong),
and at this point feel the urge to set the global caption.

There are plenty of sites where the images come from "external places"
(and get automatically indexed): The first touch with an image is often
through a content element where you want to use it. In these cases this
should also be the moment where the editor can store some meta-data for
the image (keywords, caption, categorization...).
