You at least gain the benefit that you can tune the two apache's
differently, i.e. have 1000 apache childs (without PHP module, little
memory and CPU footprints) on media.domain.com and only the few couple
apache processes on your main site, but dedicated for TYPO3 and PHP
processing. If they are on the same domain, even static files have to be
served by "bloated" apache processes with PHP.
