There was once an extension called roles2 which allowed to declare BE user 
groups as roles. Then you could select individual roles which behaved like 
being the sole backend group for the users.

This concept is pretty nice, as you did not need to learn anything new.
What was missing was a nice way to switch the roles, as the old extension 
just had an icon in the toolbar, like the clear cache menu.
