[TYPO3] GIFBUILDER and Czech characters (ISO backend!)

Hello list,

I have a problem rendering Czech characters with a GIFBUILDER object on a 
multilingual site. BE is not in UTF-8 alas, but ISO. Rendering of normal 
text is ok, by using a charset: charset=windows-1250. But gifbuilder 
objects are rendered with the standard ISO charset and therefore incorrect.
The setup voor the Czech language is as follows:

[globalVar = GP:L = 6]
config.sys_language_uid = 6
config.language = cz
config.locale_all = cs_CZ.ISO8859-2 #this locale is available on the system 
(checked)
config.htmlTag_langKey = cz
config.metaCharset = windows-1250
config.renderCharset = windows-1250

By the way: the font used has the Czech chars!

I have searched both english and german list but not found any working 
tips. Help much appreciated!
