That is not true. In TYPO3 you can configure BE to be very simple and
such thing like template choosing is not a problem either.
Look at those extensions:
1) Page Template Selector by Robert Lemke (rlmp_tmplselector)
2) Template Selector to Column View mapper (stfl_tmpl2columns)
You can also have look at efforts of Tapio (tm_contentaccess) who made
an extension which allows to simplify BE even more than standard
settings allows.

You can make BE very simple but still you need to learn how to do it.
