> We are using Typo3 3.8.1.

Make sure you have backed up

1) The database
2) /typo3conf /fileadmin /uploads folders
3) .htaccess

> I installed Typo3 from old 3.8.1 tar file and then dummy the same way.

4) Download fresh copies of the 3.8.1 src and dummy packages and check the
md5sums.

5) Follow all the usual proceedure to install until you see the no pages at
root level warning.

Don't use the .txd import

6) Start by restoring the database and check the tables to see the data you
expect is there.

7) Restore the old static file data,
eg .htaccess, /fileadmin /uploads /localconf and localconf.php
files/folders

8) Check your templates have included things like the CSS styled content etc
if needed

9) Check your extensions are installed as previous

10) Clear all caches

11) You should be back up and running

Enjoy!
