[Typo3] Wot, no thumbnails?

you'd get NO thumbnails and errors in every one of the Image
Processing tests.

Yes, I agree, IM is installed and working, but I can't get thumbnails within the Typo3 interface. That is, when I'm in the Typo3 backend and trying to add images to web pages as per the tutorial instructions, thumbnails aren't being generated for JPEGs or GIFs. See page 28 of the PDF tutorial, or http://typo3.org/documentation/document-library/doc_tut_quickstart/New_page/ in the online tutorial, and under the subheading "Inserting another content element" there's a notice referring to missing thumbnails. The notice points you to the mailing list archives, but unless I'm using the wrong search terms I couldn't find anything on this problem. As IM is plainly up and running, it's bound to be some minor tweak, perhaps to the PATH.
