[Typo3] Install via Fantastico

FYI fantastico on my shared server works fine for my installs. I usually get 
500 errors when I've fiddled with file permissions and put write permissions 
on php files.  My shared server won't allow this for security reasons.

Are you able to get to /typo3/install ? or is that also a 500 error?
