Symlink changes with 4.0 will only matter if there's an extension that
requires symlink placement to tslib directory i think. If that is a
problem and you've already deleted the symlink to tslib (from the
webroot directory) then you could try to uninstall that extensions until
you find the one that's causing the problem.
Unfortunately there's not much you can do in this case if your host
doesn't provide shell access. Along with ImageMagick (I don't know of
any hosts that provide Graphics Magic yet (except for those rare web
hosts who give customised support).
I usually try to avoid uncooperative hosts if at all possible; esp. the
one's who suggest I 'use an easier' system which to me translates to
'don't use our hosting then'. Since, what I do is deliver CMS support
why would I move my client to a less capable system?

Unfortunately, if you're setting up TYPO3 from scratch a acquiring a
little knowledge in this area is unavoidable. You've come this far,
reading one or two articles on use of the shell prompt won't be nearly
as challenging as what you've achieved so far.

Unfortunately, my web designer clients have me working on TYPO3 all
during business hours at present. As well, my partner is doing her
clinical exams for medicine in 10 weeks (she needs to practice her
techniques on someone apart from her patients) so I'm booked up.
However, I'm happy to answer any quick questions on:
iic_ebusiness at hotmail.com
Try the TYPO3 IRC chat-group too at Free-Node
<http://typo3.org/community/irc-chat/>. There are at least 60 people
monitoring that group and at least 1 or 2 who always seem to be
answering questions; *Ries *is the TYPO3 IRC white-knight there.
Best regards,
