If you entered an email in the backend user settings module, you will get 
an
email, notifying about the change. You might need to hit a checkbox 
somewhere
 when setting up the workspace.

There was an extension which did this. Search for sys_ or task_. But it 
won't
work anymore in TYPO3 4.4 because the API changed.
