Purely based on my experience, I would say:

- 5.0.x for 4.0 and 4.1
- 5.1.x for 4.2

I would expect 4.0 and 4.1 to run fine with 5.1, because I've never had 
any trouble going from 5.0 to 5.1, but I don't have running examples 
except my local test sites (which run fine).
