Yeah I know that kind of bot protection. But this something different than just 
a checkbox. It's just a matter of time when bots can search for such things. So 
I would prefer a protection which very similiar to your suggestion.

What is the result of 12 + 3: ________

I think that is much harder for bots to solve. And still very easy for humans. 
You can also write such a question in full prosa. Like

Please insert the result of 12 plus three: ________
