[TYPO3-typo3org] ter2 with typo3.x ?

hi there !

dont know if this is the right group, but i hope i get an 
answer nevertheless...

is there a way for users of typo3 <4.0 to install the EM 
of typo3 >4.0 ?
Currently i use a switch during installation of my ter_update_check
ext to let the user decide, which version of TER he is using.
i wonder if it is possible and reliable to make this decision
by looking up the version number of typo3 the ext is running in...

any comments ?
