+1 - dropshadows don't fit the the overall design - I also would suggest either a 1 or 2px light colored border or some special place in the layout (see header-image on typo3.com). There could be a header-image but only inside the content area with a 2px orange bottom-border.

+1 - as much as I know "roalty-free" only means that you can use the image as often as you like if you have bought it once - it doesn't mean they are totally free.

For totally free images have a look at http://www.sxc.hu - but check out the permission restrictions below the images (most of them are without any restriction and free for use).
