Clear answer: Yes, it is definately worth it. And it won't have any bad
side-effects on people using the TER.
All extensions I am currently creating depend on PHP5 because it has so many
advantages. Currently we're really in trouble with the blurry API of the
TYPO3 core due to the lack of declarations like public, protected and
private. But of course there's much more like proper SOAP support, working
XML parsers etc.
TYPO3 4.0 will officially work with PHP5 (and PHP4) and TYPO3 5.0 will only
work with PHP5. For my own projects I am currently preparing transition to
PHP5 and it works out fine until now.
