We should use a format for "development", that is readable by most
computers so that as many people can contribute as possible. Those
formats are:
png - vectors with Fireworks, but readable with every browser
ai - Adobe Illustrator file with vector information
svg - some other xml like format

They not only help in "development" but also help in the final product.
Vecorized images can be scaled up/down with no problems. This means we
can include features like several icon sizes without having to draw one
icon several times. If you have a vector image/icon with the size of
100x100 you can easily scale it up to 900x900..

Another advantage of it is, that you can apply several parts to a
vectorized image with an ease. e.g. you don't have to draw an icon for
hidden/time controled/.... You just take the icon and tell image magic
to apply the special part to it. Even those icons can be scaled up and down.

That's why we should use vectorized images.

Do PS files contain those information? And is there another program than
Photoshop to open them?

Andreas
