Yes, bandwidth should still be a task - but two icons that can be cached 
by the browser are really no big deal - even with a modem connection or 
ISDN (a german telephone-protocol).

Btw - did you know that you can enable some more graphic caching since 
the 4.1 branch of Typo3? All you need is mod_cache (or so) on your 
webserver and 'activate' (rename) some .htaccess files in the TYPO3 
directory. This allows numerous BE icons to be browser cached.
