the GPL says "free as in freedom not free as in free beer"

that means in this case

- you are totally free to sell your GPL-Software
- you are not forced to publisch your private development

- but if you give the software to anyone you have to give him the
sources too together with the right to change them and to publish them.
you are not allowed to exclude some of the mentioned rights.

so i think your position is totally gpl-compliant.

by the way: a good argument for many customers is "you pay for the
initial development and get a working solution. others pay for
refinements and you get an update".
