In fact, if you say something like "IDEs are for beginners" (which can 
sound a bit arrogant to some people) you should be reminded that there 
are lot of people who would tell you that PHP is for "beginners".

I think beginners start with a simple (!) editor and switching to an IDE 
or (as a "freak") to vim for example.
Beginners will have problems starting with a complex IDE like Eclipse. 
For example no java beginner is introduced to Eclipse because normally 
you have to learn syntax and paradigm first before benefitting from the 
power of an IDE.

That's something I can agree on, too.
