I definitely agree that the cleanest solution would be to allow an 
infinite number of additional attributes on the relation itself, and not 
just a single "role" attribute.

Apparently, Sebastian Kurfürst has thought about this when implementing 
the bidirectional mm-relationships to the new core but has decided 
against implementing since it would cause new issues to edit the 
attributes on the relationships.

I guess Olly's proposal could really provide a solution to this problem.

Olly, are you planning to include this in your diploma thesis? :-)
