Hi!

Yes we can do a self-update, but the problem here obviously was not composer, but 

git clone --single-branch --branch master --depth 1 git://github.com/typo3-ci/TYPO3-Travis-Integration.git build-environment

So travis could not connect to gibhub or something in the filesystem was corrupt (error 128 seems to have many reasons).
But it worked in all other jobs, so nothing to worry I guess
