Yes, because the intranet systems and/or GUIs for applications do not 
support higher versions.

AFAIK at least Deutsch Bank and Postbank are still using IE8. Although I do 
not know for sure.

I also *heard* that VW uses some kind of customized version of IE6 ...

Taking an educated guess ... if a company uses IBM mainframes, they are 
still using IE8 ... just a guess though.

I would be interested in such data too.

Oh, while we are at it ... a lot of ministries and government agencies (in 
Germany) still use IE8 and lower. E.g. the "Deutsch Rentenversicherung Bund" 
even downgraded their notebooks (from this year) to XP.
Taking another educated guess by looking at the stats of a website that is 
often visited by ministry of defense workers (Germany), they are still using 
windows NT (at least partially). Last month stats: Win7 132, XP 63, 30, Mac 
OS 28, Android 22, iPad 22, iPhone 17, Vista 10, Linux 7, iPod 4 ... This 
website is a local sports club.
