[TYPO3-core] Collections?

Hi all,

Something called "Collections" was introduced in TYPO3 4.7, but as fas 
as I can see it is not used in the Core (neither in 4.7, nor in 6.0). Is 
that right? No documentation patch was submitted and I couldn't find 
anything in the wiki...

If yes, what were they meant for, how can they be used and could someone 
write some brief information about its usage?
