[TYPO3-core] TYPO3 6.0 Feature Freeze and Merge Freeze

Hi everybody,

we'd like put some more lights on the next steps concerning Feature and
Merge Freeze for the Git master branch (TYPO3 6.0) - see the previous
announcement as well:

for Feature Freeze and Merge Freeze
Monday, August 20th 2012, 6pm CEST (4pm UTC/GMT)


1) Feature Freeze

We are in soft-feature-freeze phase right now. This means, that you
should not hand in new feature request via review.typo3.org - however,
pending features still can be reviewed and merged until the hard feature
freeze will be effective (today, 6pm CEST). Thus, there are still some
hours to get things merged to the upstream master branch.

Once the deadline today has passed, no more new features are allowed to
be integrated in Core and also not in submodules (Extbase, Fluid, DBAL,
Workspaces, Version, Linkvalidator). If there are doubts or there is a
demand to do so, please get in contact with the TYPO3 6.0 Release Team.

Features or changes that are considered as feature, which are merged
after the deadline will be reverted if they have not been
approved/accepted by the Release Team.


2) Merge Freeze

Since the PHP namespace changes need to be integrated and streamline
during the next few days, the merge freeze is effective after the
mentioned deadline as well. This means, that nothing (no tasks, no
bugfixes, just nothing) is allowed to be merged anymore until the
Release Team announces the end of the merge freeze in some days.

So, basically don't click the "submit patch" button in Gerrit for the
master branch during the next few days after 6pm CEST today.


3) Feature Freeze Exceptions

However there are some exceptions concerning feature that are still
allowed to (possibly) be tackled and integrated after the feature
freeze. The TYPO3 6.0 Release Team agreed on the following list of
possible candidates:

Features:
* Drag'n'Drop for page module in the backend
* XSRF Security Protection for the whole backend
* Localization Package Handling Module (extracted from former EM)
* Workspace Enhancements (Translation, Notification and Performance)

Tasks (API changes & Cleanups):
* Changes to the File Abstraction Layer (t3lib/file & in Extbase)
* Streamline the new Extension Manager
* Streamline the TYPO3 Bootstrap mechansim
* Deprecation of functionality
* Enhance test coverage by unit-tests
* CGL Cleanups


4) Vacations

Helmut will be on vacation and basically offline the next two weeks -
thus, if you need feedback on something please write your questions here
or get in contact with Christian, Susanne and me if you need the
personal way of handling.
