FYI: the attached patch has been committed to trunk in rev. 9667

Problem:
The Signature for the rendering function dismatches the signature of all 
other rendering functions (of the select fields)

Notes:
This is a, for better understanding for new guys, if they already have 
known different rendering types, and furthermore this adds the 
possiblity to add a slight speedup/bugfix. (See later)
