What is considered clean depends on the point of view. I think the above 
looks ugly, not clean.

I would rather have specific stylesheet files loaded on demand.

I also think that it is unfortunately too early to use many of the 
features of CSS3, unless we are sure that they degrade gracefully. And 
if the new BE design absolutely requires gradients, then I agree with 
Joey and let's stick to background images.
