You are not alone, same here.

I played around and ended up with:
t3lib_extMgm::addToAllTCAtypes('tt_content','tx_damttcontent_files','image','replace:imagefiles,--palette--;;imagefiles');

This gave me the (one) dam field in the right tab but it does not
replace the orig. image-files field.
