We could, but we've got to make sure that the possible error conditions 
(at least the most common one) are checked for and handled. I haven't 
looked at this particular patch, but my caution comes from the 
experience of having PHP warnings flung into AJAX responses and breaking 
everything, although I'm not sure this still happens as of 4.3 and 
above, since the output is better buffered/flushed.
