Ok, some additional notes:

The patch currently only applies on 4-4 and trunk. If it is accepted I
will provide patches for 4-3 an 4-2 also.

I'm not too sure about the best practice of arranging the helper
functions in the unit tests. I just did it, like I thought it's reasonable.
