Thanks for your patches...
I tried with "/" defined in TypoScript and got redirected to
myhost.com// (double slashes). The strange thing then was that the
logout form points me to "//" in the action - thus the request did not
succeed at all. I'm not sure whether this is releated or if it was wrong
before in felogin.

I will dig into the whole thing deeper tomorrow...
