Your patch looks good. However, I'm not sure if relying on definitions
in different classes and scopes is good (backend parsehtml and frontend
cObj). Besides that it might happen, that not only "linkhandlers"
beginning with "<handler>:" modify links - so there could be a general
preprocessing for links in that case...

I've attached a new patch that integrates a new hook for this situation.
The file ending with "ws" is the whitespace stripped version...
