You're reasoning is wrong. The extra processing time is only done "once" 
at caching time. If there is only one pair of php tags at the beginning 
and at the end, this perhaps increases the performance as PHP is not 
required to shift between code and text modes. I let the measuring of 
the actual performance difference as an exercise for the reader. ;-)
