Of course you are right, it would be nice to have this also available

I attached a new version of the patch.

Examples would be

lib.fo = TEXT
lib.fo {
  value =  * Hello World *
  trim = 1
  trim.charList = | *|
}

of course trim.charList = * is possible to, but as mentioned by Dmitry 
this won't trim the spaces.
