-1 on your patch because it will break quite a few extensions in the 
Frontend including:
mootools: rgsmoothgallery, rgecard, rgtabs, rgaccordion, rgmoodalbox, 
rgsmoothgallerylinks, rgsmoothscroll, rgvalidator, rgcountdown (all 
mine) and pmkslimbox, perfectlightbox (with mootools), pmkisac

and i guess also the other framework extensions based on jquery (if no 
combat mode), extJs

Of course all these extensions are not very "important", the page will 
still work but if you just use a ajax library for one simple request 
then please to it on yourself and not with a library because it will 
break all the others (and it can also be that even the RTE won't work).

The conflict between the libraries is known, won't be certainly solved 
inside TYPO3 and maybe also not outside of it.

mootools and protype can't work on the same side, this is easy to proof 
and Steffen is wrong in this case.
